How do I get picture on TV from PC using VGA cable?

So I bought a VGA Cable so I could see muh Laptop on my television, and although both my laptop and TV have the correct jack in thingie for it I can't seem to get it to work. I assume it must be more complicated then just plug in both ends. I've cycled through all the source things, but no picture. Help?
